Rosati-Kain Catholic High School Representatives Visit STBCS

Rosati-Kain Catholic High School Representatives Visit STBCS

On Monday October 23rd, two representatives of Rosati- Kain Catholic High School, an all girls school in St. Louis MO came and spoke with our middle school girls. The ladies played a game of “zip-zap-zop” ( a favorite for middle school) for an icebreaker for 6-8 grade girls. They then played a game of bingo in which the girls had an opportunity to learn more about Rosati-Kain and what they offer academically, socially, and sports opportunities. Some of the girls received a Rosati Kain water bottle and each girl received a RK fanny pack! Thank you Rosati!

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

This week we are learning about the rosary. Over time many religions have used prayer beads or other items to focus their prayer. Catholics use rosary beads to track their progress through prayers, so the mind can wander spiritually in a meditative state of mind. Each student is receiving a World Mission Rosary to learn on and keep.

Pinwheels for Peace: International Peace Day September 21, 2018

Pinwheels for Peace: International Peace Day September 21, 2018

Students and Staff at Sister Thea Bowman Catholic School continued their long tradition of making colorful Pinwheels for Peace each year for International Peace Day, which is celebrated September 21st. each year, the students learn about the movement to bring Peace to the world, and as a sign of support, they join thousands of school age children across the globe by putting their Pinwheels for Peace outside.

The project website, PinwheelsForPeace.com, asks us to “Imagine…  millions of pinwheels spinning in the wind – pinwheels in the United States, Great Britain, South America, Australia, the Middle East, Canada,  Africa, Europe and Asia… pinwheels with words of peace and harmony written on them…EVERYWHERE!”

Sister Thea Bowman Catholic School is located in East St Louis, IL, and all of the students begin each day with a Peacemaker Pledge to be “peacemakers in actions and words”, so the Pinwheels for Peace Project fits in perfectly with the spirit they try to carry. Today, between rain showers, they prayed for peace and then enjoyed the spinning of the pinwheels as the wind carried peace throughout the school, community, and the world.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Evangelists! Who are they? In reality, we are all called to be Evangelists and bring people to God. We are focused this week in having our students be Evangelists through showing the virtue of PEACE to others. What more powerful way to Evangelize is there than to use more Christian Actions…which requires less words.

BOBO’S PIZZA FUNDRAISER

You all have done outstanding!!! If you still orders, have it to us by FRIDAY! Results next week; Pizzas Oct 4th!

EAST ST LOUIS 3K FITNESS WALK

Join your neighbors and our school for a community 3K walk. Saturday, Sep 22, at 10 AM. We plan to have a big school showing of students and families! If you did not sign up, you can still show up and support FITNESS! Starts at Mary Brown Center, East St Louis. 606 S 15th St.

SHOES

The intent of the school dress code is to be inclusive and save families money by making the uniform simple. We expanded the shoe colors to include a black/white combo, but no additional colors. “Solid white or solid black tennis shoes with tied laces. If shoes have name/insignia, it must be either black or white. No additional colors, no light-up shoes, no sparkles on shoes.”

We have too many shoes with color insignias, which are not allowed. Our staff is getting complaints from students and families about those not following rules because “it is unfair”, and we agree.

On Monday, Oct 1, any student with improper shoes will be given one day to correct the problem. You may: 1) purchase uniform shoes, 2) black out colors with a black Sharpie, 3) apply black Duct Tape over colored area. No exceptions.

CLASSROOM VISITS OR TEACHER CONFERENCES

We have an open door policy at Sister Thea Bowman, but we ask you to respect the teacher/student time. You may visit a class, but we ask you to coordinate with the teacher first to ensure minimal class disruption. Use Fast Direct, direct teacher contact, or office contact to arrange a date/time. All visitors must check in with the office through the side door for safety. We ask that you do not try “to catch” the teacher in the morning, unless you have a pre-set appointment, as our teachers have a lot to do between 7:30 and 8:00 AM to make the day run smoothly.

MIDTERM REPORTS

The 1st Qtr Midterm Reports come home today. If you have questions on grades, contact the teacher first or review grades on Fast Direct. You may set up a teacher conference at any time. Also, please seriously consider our Extended Day program if your student is struggling academically.

IOWA ASSESSMENT (IA) FALL TESTING (Grades 2 – 8)

On Monday, we begin IA Fall testing. This is a national standards test Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. It is very important to have your students at school and on-time Monday – Wednesday. Please ensure they get plenty of sleep. We also recommend they arrive for breakfast in the morning by 7:30, so we can be sure they have a good breakfast to last through the morning testing. Follow-up testing is done in April.

SISTER THEA BOWMAN ACADEMY CORNER

At midterm of the first quarter, the Academy instructors of the Sixth grade say the students are doing well academically and behaviorally in the following courses, Chess, Improv Theater and Young professionals. Mr. Branislav, Improv Theater Teacher, states that “STB Academy Sixth graders are his best class this quarter”. In the Academy Sports Basketball Camp, last week the Rockets beat the Hoop Squad and the Golden 5 Ballers beat ZOOM. The students are learning how to compete and have fun doing so. We continue to see growth in the students ability to exercise Self Control and Responsible Decision making.
