Saint Andrew, the Apostle
Dear Priests, Deacons, Parish Life Coordinators, Religious, Seminarians, and Staff:
I am happy to inform you that during our General Assembly in Baltimore, the Roman Catholic Bishops of the United States approved the petition of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Joseph R. Kopacz, Bishop of Jackson, Mississippi, to support the Cause for Canonization of the Servant of God, Sr. Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A.
As you know, we have an excellent school in our Diocese named in honor of this heroic woman of faith. I knew her personally throughout an impressive 25 years of her brief life. I had the privilege to speak to her by phone the day before she died.
Please make good use of this information to inform your parish about the cause for her canonization and use the prayer (O God, Glorify Thea…) that is included at meetings and other events where it might be appropriate.
The cause for canonization of the Servant of God, Sr. Thea Bowman would be a great grace for the Catholic Church and a great affirmation of the life of an extraordinary woman who lived and died working and pleading for the end of the racial divide in this country. She was a remarkable example of one who obeyed the Law of Love given to us by Jesus of Nazareth: “Love God with your whole being and love your neighbor as you love yourself.”
She is an excellent companion for us all during these days of Advent.
Prayerfully yours in Christ,
The Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton, Ph.D., S.T.D.
