STEWARDSHIP

Classes are exploring the concept of “stewardship” during Morning Prayer. A steward is a person who is given both the authority over what she or he cares for and the responsibility for seeing that it lives and grows. We are all called to be stewards of what God has created.  As a school, starting next week on Monday, November 16, and ending Tuesday, November 24, we will collect canned goods for CUP, Catholic Urban Program. We will become stewards of our community.

WE REMEMBER

During November, we are praying for our family members and friends who have passed into eternity.  Students and staff are writing these family members’ names on flames and placing them on candles at our entrance doors to show that those who have passed light our way. We will have some cut paper at the office if you would like to come in and write a loved ones’ name for remembrance. Special paper is also being used this month in the Book of Intentions and is dedicated to those who have died.  All are encouraged to write in the names of deceased family and friends.

ANNUAL FUND

Is your Annual Fund envelope still at home or have you returned it to school with a donation and/or prayer?  If it’s been misplaced, we are sending home the Annual Fund letter (again) with an envelope attached. Please return it to school. A challenge went out to the students: the first class to have 100% of their envelopes returned will have a pizza party on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break.

PICTURES

Picture Retake Day is Thursday, November 19, for students who were not present on October 16, and for students who need to get their photo retaken.  Students who are getting retakes must turn in their original photo package to the office.  Since the pictures will be taken first thing in the morning, students may come to school out of uniform and change after the photos are taken.

MASS

Mass tomorrow will be led by the fifth graders.  All are welcomed to attend.

NON-UNIFORM PASS DAY

Students who purchased the Non-Uniform Pass Coupon Book may be out of uniform this Friday, November 13. Please see p. 24 of the handbook to make sure they follow our Non-Uniform Day guidelines.

MEDICINE AT SCHOOL

Flu and cold season is definitely here. Many students are going home with coughs and flu-like symptoms. Please remember that if your child is running a fever, she/he needs to stay home for 24 hours after they are fever-free. If your child needs to take medicine the following procedures must be followed:

1. The school medication consent form must be sent to school to be filed in the school office. (Copies will be provided.)
2. The medication must be sent in its original container.
3. The container must be marked with the child’s name.
4. The utensil for exact dosage must be included.

One last reminder: even if you call in to let us know that your child is sick, a note is also needed stating the dates your child was absent and the reason before your child can be admitted to the classroom.

MIDTERM

Second quarter midterm is next Friday, November 20.  Midterm reports will be sent home on Tuesday, November 24.  Please note that all tuition, meal, and Extended Day payments must be current in order to receive this report.  Return the signed Progress Reports on Monday, November 30. Thank you for your cooperation.

THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving Break will be November 25-27. May you and your family enjoy the bounty and the graces of this Blessed Season!

Information on school cancellation or early dismissal due to bad weather will be broadcast on television Channel 5. In addition, an email or text “blast” will go out through Fast Direct.  Are you connected?

TRUNK OR TREAT

Thanks so much for making our 12th annual “Trunk or Treat” event a big success!  Special thanks to all who decorated their car/truck trunks and passed out candy as the parade of ghosts and ghouls, wizards and superheroes went from car to car “Trunk or Treat”ing. Also thanks to our school families who were so generous with donating Halloween treats; and to our staff for their part in making things run so smoothly.

NO BUS SERVICE

There will be no bus service for our students Wednesday, November 11, due to Veterans Day.  We will have school, so we thank you for doing all you can to find a way for your child to be here.

NEW STUDENTS

Enrollment has been growing in the last month. We would like to welcome: Lizabeth Perez, Yovana Pedroza (Kindergarten), Gerardo Perez (1st), Jimonnie Whittaker (6th), and Gabriel Magana (7th).

We now have 120 students and will continue enrolling until January. Welcome!

ANNUAL FUND

Is your Annual Fund envelope still at home or have you returned it to school with a donation or prayer?  Annual Fund envelopes for families were due on Friday, October 30. We are in need of your support to continue with the programs that are making a difference in your children’s lives. Please return them as soon as possible.  Many blessings.

PICTURES

ANNUAL FUND

Have you turned in your Annual Fund envelope? It’s due tomorrow!

This is the first of our two fund raising events. You may make a donation, include a prayer for our school, or do both. 100% participation is needed.

PAINT THE GYM

Thank you to all of the parents/guardians, students, alumni, and friends who helped “Paint the Gym” on Saturday! Although there’s more work yet to be done, this was a huge success in our makeover of the gym. (Roberta Trost, Advancement)

FIELD TRIP REFLECTION

On Tuesday, October 13, the Second Grade went on a field trip to the Watershed Nature Center in Edwardsville.  Five other second grade classes from the Belleville Diocese went with us.  It was cool to scoop plants, like duckweed, out of the lake and look at them under a microscope.  We used our “fox feet” to creep on the nature trail to a tree house and look for clues about animals.  We found a plant that smelled like root beer when we scratched it.  We ended the day with lunch and a big group picture.  We received lots of compliments from the guides.  We hope we can go again. (Second Grade)

REPORT CARD CONFERENCES

Thank you for your attendance at report card conferences last week. We appreciate your understanding of the importance of having your child present, and your willingness to listen and help set goals for the rest of the year. Parents/guardians, students, teachers….together, we fulfill our mission to “inspire, prepare, and empower…the next generation of wholesome, responsible, and dedicated leaders of their communities and our world.”

MIX-IT-UP DAY

What an “adventurous” day we had this past Tuesday…full of meeting new friends and learning to work as a team. As a part of this year’s “Mix-It-Up” Day, students in grades 5-8 visited Immaculate Conception School in Columbia, Illinois.  Time was spent getting to know each other through a team building program: “Adventures in Learning”. Students worked in groups of four to identify different instruments; build an ark out of supplies given to them that would float and carry some of Noah’s animals; construct Stonehenge in a minute out of dominoes; identify Egyptian rulers whose names were written in hieroglyphics; and create a three dimensional  mythical creature. A pizza lunch was shared by all. We wish to give a sincere thank you to all at ICS, especially Mr. Kisch and Sue Lewis who made this day possible and helped us build a little more appreciation for each other.

LIVING ROSARY

Wednesday found us praying the rosary as a school with eighth graders leading the way.  The “son” shone and all was right with the world.

AWARD MASS

This Friday at 8:30am we will have our quarterly awards Mass over in the chapel. Students who have earned awards will receive certificates for Perfect Attendance, Peacemaker, Honor Roll, or High Honor Roll for the First Quarter.  All family members are welcome to attend.

TRUNK OR TREAT

Our 12th annual “Trunk or Treat” event will be held tomorrow, Friday, October 30.   Students are invited to bring a costume to change into for a 2:00p.m parade through the school.  We count on our parents/guardians to make sure that costumes are appropriate for the child’s age and for wearing at a Catholic school event. Traditional Halloween costumes such as skeletons, scarecrows and witches are fine.  Costumes/masks of famous singers or stars who use violent, foul or degrading lyrics or images are not allowed, as well as anything bloody and/or violent in nature. Props, including toy guns and swords, etc., are also not allowed.  Please note that students do not have to have a costume to participate in Trunk or Treat.  Your child should bring a container for the Halloween treats they receive.

Parents/Guardians who are participating are invited to come between 1:30-1:50p.m.  A staff person will be on hand to show you where to park your car out on the playground area between the school and the church.  Feel free to come in costume and to decorate your car in Halloween style!  Have the Halloween treats, (wrapped candy, stickers, and pencils) you plan to hand out in the trunk of your car.  Please note that for safety reasons, all entrances to the parking lot will be closed at 2:00pm and won’t reopen until 3:30p.m. dismissal.  
After a class has been to each car, they will go back into to their classrooms to enjoy their treats until dismissal time at 3:30p.m. Parents/Guardians are welcome to enjoy some refreshments in the staff room until dismissal time.  If you are unsure of the appropriateness of your child’s costume for this event, or if you have any other questions regarding this event, please call the school office. Thanks for all you will do to make our 12th annual Trunk or Treat event a huge success!

EXTENDED DAY

MASS

Due to Report Card Conferences, Mass is on Wednesday this week. Eighth grade will lead. Know that you are always welcome to attend.

REPORT CARD CONFERENCES

Report Card Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 22, from 9am-8pm.  Report Card Conference times were included in last Thursday’s envelope. Remember all fees (tuition, Before Care/Extended Day, lunch) need to be paid before a conference can be held. There is no school the next day, Friday, October 23.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: PAINT THE GYM

This Saturday, October 24, alumnae from St. Philip’s (now Sister Thea Bowman Catholic School) will be painting the gym.  We are in need of many hands. This would be a wonderful opportunity to give of your time and work with other supporters of our school. The event begins at 9am and goes until 1pm. There will be a Continental Breakfast and music by D J Needles. Please come out and help us make a difference in our students’ lives.

And if you really want to be doubly blessed, on Friday, October 23, we will do the prep work needed before the painting.  Walls need washing and cobwebs conquered. We will clean in the afternoon from 1pm-3pm. Please call the school at 397-0316 if you can help on either of these two days.

ALTHOFF OPEN HOUSE

Students in 4th through 8th grade, who are interested in learning more about Althoff Catholic High School, are invited to attend their Open House on Sunday, October 25.

This is one of our two fundraisers. Families pledge financial support and/or prayer in order to keep our school going. Your support is vital to the future of your children and all the future students who will become a part of the Sister Thea Bowman family. We are Children of The Way.

We ask that each family return their envelope by Friday, October 30. If your family returns their envelope by that Friday, your child may be out of uniform on Tuesday, November 3.

Somos niños/as del camino, la verdad y la vida

Misa: Este viernes el tema de la Misa es San Lucas.  Muchas clases están escribiendo historias favoritas de Jesús.  Tal vez, su familia puede hablar de este tema.  La segunda clase están preparando la Misa.

Fotos: El día de fotos es el viernes, 16 de octubre  y todos estudiantes tomaran fotos pero no necesita comprar.  No uniformes pero la ropa es de reglas para días sin uniformes.

Ficha para no uniforme: El día para estudiantes que tienen una ficha es lunes, 19 de octubre.

Conferencias de notas: Las conferencias de notas es jueves el 22  de octubre, 9:00 – 20:00.  Tiempos para sus conferencias están en este sobre.   Recuerda que su niño/a esta un parte de conferencia y cuentas necesitan pagado. No hay clases el viernes, el 23 de octubre.

Oportunidad para voluntarios: Pintar el cafetería: El sábado el 24 un grupo de personas va a pintar la cafetería.  Necesitamos muchas manos. Es una buena oportunidad a ayudar con otras personas.  Hay un desayuno y DJ.  9:00 – 13:00.

El día antes preparamos la cafetería—lavando las paredes.

Este proyecto  es 13:00 – 15:00.  Llame la escuela si puede ayudar viernes o sábado a 397-0316.

Casa abierta a Altoff: Estudiantes de clases 4 -8 están invitados a casa abierta a Altoff el domingo el 25 de octubre.

Fundo Anual: Educación Católica es importante y cuesta mucha.  Las familias están un parte muy importante. En nuestra escuela hay dos oportunidades para las familias a participar—Fundo Anual donde cada familia puede ayudar con oraciones y/o donativos para el futuro de esta  escuela.  Estamos niños/as del camino.

Pedimos que cada familia enviar el sobre en esta semana.  Si su familia envía el sobre antes de viernes, su niño/a no necesita llevar uniforme el martes el 3 de noviembre.

Tronca o broma: Nuestra  Tronco o broma es el viernes, 30 de octubre.  

Estudiantes pueden traer ropa apropiada para 14:00. Ropa de violencia o de personas de violencia no están apropiada.  No necesita ropa de tronco o broma para participación pero necesitan una bolsa para dulces.

Hay un incentiva para ropa de un santo o santa en K-5 o persona de estudias sociales en clases 6-8.  Hay premios.

Padres o cuidadores que participan llega entre 13:30 – 13:45 y una persona de equipo va a direcciones para poner su coche.  Para razones de seguridad, nadie puede entre 14:00 y 15:30.

Después cada clase  visitare todos coches, ellos retornan a sus salas y padres/custodios, si quiere, van a cuarto de equipo.

MASS

Mass this Friday focuses on St. Luke and his stories of Jesus. Students have been asked to journal about their favorite story about Jesus. This might be a good discussion to have as a family. Grade 2 leads the Mass this week. Know that you are always welcomed to attend.

MASS

The theme for this Thursday’s Mass is “Love Everyone.” Students have been asked to journal about why they think people have a hard time loving others. This might be a good discussion to have as a family. Grade 3 leads the Mass this week. Know that you are always welcomed to attend.

MORNING PRAYER

October is traditionally celebrated in the Catholic Church as the Month of the Holy Rosary. Students have been given rosaries to bring to Morning Prayer and are learning the prayers associated with it. The Rosary is Christ centered in that it sets forth the entire life of Jesus Christ: His birth, Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Glory. Meditation on this cycle is known as the Mysteries of the Rosary.

DIOCESAN CONVENTION

There will be no school this Friday, October 9, because our staff will participate in the annual Diocesan Convention at Holy Trinity in Fairview Heights.

NO BUSES 

We are sorry to say that there will be no bus service on Monday, October 12.  Although we have school, District 189 does not have school scheduled on their calendar.  We were very proud of how many students made it to school those first weeks when we did not have bus service. We had close to 100% the first day. Please try to ensure they come even when District 189 does not have school.

A QUICK NOTE:

School has been in session almost two months. It is time now for your child to be more independent at breakfast and entering school in the morning. How can you help? When you bring them to school in the morning, give them your blessing for a good day and send them on their way. If you need to come into school, please come into the office and let Ms. Francine know. She will make sure that a message is given to the teacher, and they will get back to you as soon as possible.

MASS
This Friday’s Mass will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Similar to our Pope Francis, St. Francis worked to bring a greater awareness of the need to care for the poor and people on the fringe of society.  Grade 4 leads the Mass this week. Know that you are always welcomed to attend.

YOUTH GROUP
St. Augustine of Hippo Catholic Church in East St. Louis extends a special invitation to our 8th grade students-the opportunity to join their youth group. JaMaya and Jasmine Bonner participated this past Sunday as a guest of Malynnda Aldridge-Johnson at a Teen Challenge workshop. Please see the flyer enclosed in this week’s Thursday envelope if you are interested in your child joining the youth group.

TESTING
Next week, students in grades 3, 5, and 7 will continue with testing as they complete the Cognitive Ability Test. Also, if a student missed a section of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, time will be given to help them make it up.   In order to give your child every opportunity to continue to do well, please make sure they get plenty of rest, eat a good breakfast, and get to school on time.  Thank you for your cooperation.

SPEAKING OF UNIFORMS
Cooler weather is on the way. Students are allowed to wear long sleeve white, hunter green, red, or black uniform shirts or they may wear button- down sweaters in the same colors over their uniform shirt, or they may wear a STBCS sweatshirt with a uniform shirt underneath. School sweatshirts are available in green or white. Youth sizes-Adult XL are $14.00; XXL and larger are $16.00. Payments may be made in cash or a check payable to the school.

We also want to thank all of you who have made the effort to make sure your child is in the correct uniform day after day.  Many blessings!

EXTENDED DAY-SESSION 2
Session 2 began on Monday, September 28 and ends on Friday, November 6.  The cost for the 6-week session is $50.00 for one child and $70.00 per family. Please make sure that you have signed your child up for the new session. They may enter late, but there is a $10 extra charge attached to late registration. For the next six weeks, students will have the opportunity to attend Liturgical Dance Classes under the direction of Rev. Tracy Holliway-Wiggins.

Our students and staff joined over 3.5 million people across the globe in participating in the annual Pinwheels for Peace project as part of the International Day of Peace.  During our Morning Prayer today, class pinwheels graced the front lawn of our school with images and messages of peace and harmony. The thought is that the breeze will capture these messages and carry them throughout the world. May peace one day prevail on Earth!

MASS

Mass tomorrow will be led by the fifth graders.  All are welcomed to attend.

TESTING

Students in Grades 2-8 will take the Iowa Assessment Test starting this Monday, September 28, and going through Wednesday, October 7. Students will normally be tested in the morning when they are more alert.  In order to give your child every opportunity to do well, please make sure they get plenty of rest, eat a good breakfast and get to school on time.  Thank you for your cooperation.

BUSSES

Thank you to all the parents/guardians, friends, staff, and students who came to support us Wednesday in court. The judge listened carefully to both sides of the issue and is now taking all things under consideration. We will let you know when a decision is made. Keep a-praying!

PEACEMAKER ACTIVITY

The September Peacemaker activity will tie in with our “Pinwheels for Peace” theme as peacemakers in grades K-8 create designs about peace with colored chalk on the blacktop.  This activity will take place on Wednesday, September 30 from 2-3pm. Students who have not received an orange WIN slip in September will be able to be out of uniform, enjoy a snack, and participate in the fun. Did your child stay a Peacemaker? Please feel free to come and enjoy this event and create your own vision of peace.

NON-UNIFORM COUPON BOOKS

At last year’s Annual Benefit Dinner, coupon books were sold that allowed students to be out of uniform an extra day each month. The cost was $20/individual student or $30/family. Would you like your child to be out of uniform one extra day a month? There are some coupon books left over, so if you are interested, please call the office and let Ms. Francine know. Send in the money and the coupon book will be yours!

EXTENDED DAY-SESSION 2 

Session 1 of Extended Day ends this Friday, September 25. Session 2 begins on Monday, September 28 and ends on Friday, November 6.  The cost for the 6-week session is $50.00 for one child and $70.00 per family. Forms were sent home last week and are due no later than this Monday.

BUSES: El juez cambió la fecha del segundo juicio. Tal vez es la próxima semana. Ahora los buses continúan recoger los estudiantes.

MEDIO DE CUATRO: El medio del cuatro termino el viernes pasado. Si Dios quiere, recibirá las notas mañana. Pero tenemos problemas con sistemas nuevas. Por cierto, si no recibe no viernes entonces recibe el lunes. Envía a escuela a escuela con firma pronto. Necesita pagar total mensualidad y otras cosas antes recibe notas.

MISA: Mañana la Misa (8:30) de honra San Mateo. Clase 6 está preparando.

FICHAS PARA NO UNIFORME: A la Cena de Beneficio en marzo pasado, algunas personas compraron fichas para un día cada mes que los estudiantes no llevan uniforme. Para un ano cuesta $20.00/niño o nina o $30.00/familia. Si quiere, paga $20.00 o $30.00 en la oficina.

“PINWHEELS” PARA LA PAZ: Nuestros estudiantes y equipo reunirán con 3.5 millones en el mundo para una actividad de la paz el próximo jueves, el 24 de septiembre. Ponemos “pinwheels” en frente de la escuela con la esperanza que el mensaje de la paz pasara en todo el mundo. Viene a las 8:00 para esta, si es posible.

NOCHE PARA ESTUDIANTES DE k-8 Y PADRES/CUIDOSES: El Althoff Secundario da un invitación para venir a un jugar futbol americana en Universidad de Lindenwood el viernes, 18 de septiembre.

DIA EXTENDIDO: Sesión 1 de Día Extendido terminara el viernes, 25 de septiembre. Sesión 2 es de 28 de septiembre a 6 de noviembre. Cuesta $50.00/persona o $70.00/familia. Es un tiempo para tarea, ayuda individual. También, tienan oportunidad a participar en Danza de Alabanza con Rev. Holloway-Wiggens.

TIERRA DE LINCOLN/ORGANIZACIÓN DE POLICIA AFRO-AMERICANAS: El sábado, el 19 de septiembre a St. Augustine de Hippo, 401 Rev. J.A. Brown Blvd., hay una presentación de: Diez Leyes de Interacción con Policía para un Buena Solución.
