We need joy as we need air.
We need love as we need water.
We need each other as we need the earth to share.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS

I want to thank all of you: students, staff, and parents/guardians for your prayers for my family. My mother passed last Thursday, February 12, at the age of 92. Her life was filled with the raising of 10 children and her deep faith in Jesus Christ. She has gone on to be with my dad and many family members in the glory of the Lord. I truly felt during my time in Michigan the love and support of my STBCS family. The students have been so kind on my return, giving me cards and hugs. I know why I teach in a Catholic school-God is allowed into all we do and say. One fifth grade student empathized with my loss: I am sorry for the loss of your mother. I went through it but be strong, trust God, and you can do it. (Antowan Chairs) Blessings, Antowan, and all who sent prayers my way. God will help us through; my mother’s faith is alive in me.  Ms. Mary

LENT

Lent began Wednesday with the celebration of Mass and the blessing of ashes which were then placed on our foreheads in the sign of the cross. This is a sign that we are Christians and are entering a holy season of preparation for Easter. During Lent we will focus on prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. Students wrote out their intentions for the season and placed them in a basket. Ask them what they will do during this holy season to prepare themselves for Christ’s resurrection?

ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER

Three weeks and counting!

Thanks to those of you who returned your money for the two tickets for the March 14th Annual Benefit Dinner. As you are aware, each family is required to purchase or sell two tickets to the dinner, or pay a $100.00 fundraising fee.  Tickets that will not be used should be returned to school.  This will help us have a more accurate meal count for the caterer.

Thanks, also, to those who have volunteered to donate a basket or silent auction item. We are in need of many more, so please consider sharing your “time or treasure” with us to make this Benefit Dinner the very best.  Joy is in the giving!

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK REFLECTIONS

Just a few of the reflections from our families and students during Catholic Schools Week. Please come in and read all the reflections posted in the hallway.

I appreciate what is being taught to both of my children about faith.  The knowledge that they’ve both picked up is outstanding.

Catholic education helps me know how to be useful to others and helpful.  The teachers use manners unlike any other school I’ve been to.

Catholic education has helped me grow in my people skills.  I still disagree with others, but I try to do it respectfully.

Catholic education helps me grow in my knowledge because I get to learn about different subjects.  I get to learn about Second Step, which is to be a good person.

I appreciate all of the hard work and dedication that is given to the students.  I’ve noticed a change in how my daughter is interested in Religion and being a better student.

JOY IN THE MORNING

We’re back in school! Alleluia!!  It was wonderful seeing everyone’s smiling face on Tuesday morning. It was good to have a break, but it’s also good to be back.  Hope your Christmas season was filled with peace and joy. Welcome to 2015, and thank you to those of you who remembered our staff members with Christmas cards and gifts.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTION: EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS

How many of you see the New Year as a time to start anew, eat a bit healthier, drink more water, set time aside to pray each day? At STBCS, we know our students can be exceptional. So to help them on this journey, each month we will focus on specific behaviors. January’s focus is the uniform and reverence in prayer.

How can you help? In the evening, as your child is getting ready for school the next day, do a quick check to make sure all parts of the uniform are ready for morning…white/forest green shirt? khaki slacks? brown/black leather belt? white or black tennis shoes? white undershirt/socks? neat hair?  lanyard/nametag at school ready for the day? positive attitude ☺

For our second resolution, teachers will discuss with students the importance of showing reverence at Morning/Evening Prayer, and when they enter the chapel. They will discuss what this looks like and why it’s important. When we say the Peace Pledge, we want to “walk the talk”…We are respectful in actions and words to GOD, self, others, and all creation. Thank you for your commitment to working alongside us to create students who are exceptional in all they do.

CATHOLIC URBAN PROGRAMS

Ms. Widener, our kindergarten teacher, worked at CUP prior to Christmas filling bags for over 200 families with food, toys, and warm socks, gloves, hats, and scarves donated by STBCS families. They were truly thankful for your generosity. It is in giving that we receive and through service we are known as followers of Christ.

SENIORS HERE

We welcome Erika Gordon and Antonio Chevis, seniors at Althoff Catholic High School and alum of Sister Thea Bowman; and Thomas Donlin and Michael Rupp, seniors at St. Louis University High School.  All are here to do their Senior Service Projects at our school.  While they are here, they will assist teachers and have opportunities to work with students.  We are glad they chose our school and grateful to all of them for their service to us.

ADVENT COLLECTION

Our annual Advent collection for Catholic Urban Program will be held December 8-20.  Items needed this year are hats, gloves, mittens, and socks! Yes, socks! Jerry Hasenstab said their greatest need is white tube socks for the homeless; heavier weight for winter would be wonderful.  We have talked a lot this year about stewardship-taking responsibility of our role as caretakers of God’s creations-giving of ourselves without expecting a reward. The students have done a wonderful job of becoming stewards, and we want them to continue to grow in this direction…but… for all those students who bring an item for the Advent Collection by December 19, they may be out of uniform on Friday, December 19  Thank you for helping us help those in need.

Our school Christmas break will begin at 12:30p.m. on Friday, December 19, and go through Monday, January 5.  Staff will have Professional Learning Teams Meeting that Monday. School will resume on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

STEWARDSHIP

Classes are exploring the concept of “stewardship” during Morning Prayer. A steward is a person who is given both the authority over what she or he cares for and the responsibility for seeing that it lives and grows. We are all called to be stewards of what God has created.  As a school, starting next week on Tuesday, November 18, and ending Tuesday, November 25, we will collect canned goods for CUP, Catholic Urban Program. We will become stewards of our community.

WE REMEMBER

During November, we are praying for our family members and friends who have passed into eternity.  Students and staff are writing these family members’ names on multi-colored leaves and placing them on crosses at our entrance doors. We will have some cut paper at the office if you would like to come in and write a loved ones’ name for remembrance. Special paper is also being used this month in the Book of Intentions and is dedicated to those who have died.  All are encouraged to write in the names of deceased family and friends.

If a student arrives without an absence note, a yellow W.I.N. slip is sent home and the child is recorded as absent until the note is brought to the school office. (P/G/S Handbook p. 7)
