MASS

Mass this week will be led by Grade 3. Due to the fact that there is no school on Friday, the Mass will be on Thursday at 8:30am.  Know that you are always welcome to attend.

DIOCESAN CONVENTION

There will be no school this Friday, October 10 because our staff will participate in the annual Diocesan Convention at Holy Trinity in Fairview Heights.

We are sorry to say that there will be no bus service on Monday, October 13.  Although we have school, District 189 is out.  We were very proud of how many students made it to school those first days when we did not have bus service. We had close to 100% the first day. Please try to ensure they come even when District 189 does not have school.

PICTURE DAY

Life Touch Studios will be here on Friday, October 17 to take photos of every student. A flyer regarding pricing and other important information is included.   Buying school pictures is optional, but if interest is low, next year they will probably only take the pictures of students who purchase packages. Students may be out of uniform on Picture Day, but must dress appropriately. Thank you, in advance, for reviewing the non-uniform guidelines in the handbook (p.23-24).

ANNUAL FUND

In last week’s envelope you received our Annual Fund letter and envelope. This is one of our two fundraisers. Families pledge financial support and/or prayer in order to keep our school going. Your support is vital to the future of your children and all the future students who will become a part of the Sister Thea Bowman family. Seek joy in the giving.

We ask that each family return their envelope by Friday, October 17.

El sistema de educación católico está basado en un espíritu  de servicio y generosidad, ambos de parte de padres y maestros.  El compromiso de la familia es una necesidad para dar educación de calidad y en la formación de una comunidad de la Fe.  En el sobre de la semana pasado reccubo una carta de Fundo Anual y un sobre.  Esta es uno de nuestros dos suplicaciones.  Las familias hacen un compromiso de dinero y/o oraciones para la continuación de nuestra escuela.  Su apoyo es muy importante para sus niños (a) y estudiantes del futuro.

REPORT CARD CONFERENCES

Report Card Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 23, from 9am-8pm.  Report Conferences sign-up sheets can be downloaded HERE. There is no school the next day, Friday, October 24.

GOOD NEWS…TESTING IS OVER!

Thank you for ensuring that your child did their very best on his/her Iowa Assessment Tests (Gr.2-8) and Cognitive Ability Tests for grades 3, 5, and 7. Students have worked hard these last few weeks.  Results should come back in about a month, and we will share them with you as soon as possible.

SPEAKING OF UNIFORMS

Cooler weather is on the way. Students are allowed to wear long sleeve white or hunter green uniform shirts or they may wear a white or hunter green button- down sweater over their uniform shirt, or they may wear a STBCS sweatshirt with a uniform shirt underneath. School sweatshirts are available in green or white. Youth sizes-Adult XL are $14.00; XXL and larger are $16.00. Payments may be made in cash or a check payable to the school.

We also want to thank all of you who have made the effort to make sure your child is in the correct uniform day after day.  Many blessings!

HABLAMOS DE UNIFORMES

El tiempo más frio esta cerca.  Los estudiantes pueden llevar camisas con mangas largos en blancas o verdes o pueden llevar un sweater con botanas con color blanco o verde o un sweatshirt con logo de STBCS con un camisa de uniforme bajo.  Pueden comprar estas sweatshirts en verde o blanco.  Nino joven/y chico cuesta $14.00 – XXL cuesta $16.00.  Compras pueden pagado en dinero o cheque a S. Thea Bowman Catholic School. 

BASKETBALL PRACTICE

Basketball practice has started at Blessed Sacrament School for both boys and girls.  Students must be passing all coursework and have respectful behavior in order to play.

EXTENDED DAY-SESSION 2  

Session 2 began on Monday, September 29 and ends on Friday, November 7.  The cost for the 6-week session is $50.00 for one child and $70.00 per family. Please make sure that you have signed your child up for the new session. They may enter late, but there is a $10 extra charge attached to late registration. For the next six weeks, students will have the opportunity to attend Praise Dance under the direction of Rev. Holliway-Wiggins and/or learn the art of Storytelling under the guidance of Mrs. Marilyn Kinsella.

DIA EXTENDIDO – SESION 2

Sesión Dos de Día Extendido comenzó el lunes, el 29 de septiembre y terminara el viernes, el 7 de noviembre.   Los estudiantes pueden registrar tarde pero hay un multo de $10 en caso de registración tarde. La meta es a mejorar capacidades y ayudar con tarea. En las próximas semanas los estudiantes aprenderán danzas de alabanza con Rev. Holliway-Wiggins y/o aprender el arte de cuentes con Señora Marilyn Kinsella.

PINWHEELS FOR PEACE
Our students and staff will join over 3.5 million people across the globe in participating in the annual Pinwheels for Peace project as part of the International Day of Peace. As part of our Morning Prayer this Friday, September 26, class pinwheels will grace the front lawn of our school with images and messages of peace and harmony. The thought is that the breeze will capture these messages and carry them throughout the world. Please come join us for Morning Prayer; we will gather at 8am. May peace one day prevail on Earth!

ADORNOS DE LA PAZ
Nuestras estudiantes y equipo reuniera con 3.5 millones personas en todo el mundo en participación en el ano anual Adornos de la paz proyecto de la paz. Parte de la oración en la mañana este viernes, el 26 de septiembre, adornos con mensajes va a adornar el césped en frente de la escuela. TESTING
Next week, students in grades 3, 5, and 7 will continue with testing as they complete the Cognitive Ability Test. Also, if a student missed a section of the test, time will be given to help them make it up. In order to give your child every opportunity to continue to do well, please make sure they get plenty of rest, eat a good breakfast, and get to school on time. Thank you for your cooperation.

EXAMENAS
La próxima semana los estudiantes de clases 3,5 y 7 continuaran los exámenes de la capacidad a entender. También, si un estudiante no cumplir un examen, hay tiempo para esta. Para proveer una buena oportunidad, su niño (a) necesita tiempo para descansa. Gracias.

PEACEMAKER ACTIVITY
The September Peacemaker activity is an assembly from Mad Science Shows called, “Fire, Wind, and Ice”. Peacemakers will be “dazzled and entertained as they learn about chemical reactions, air pressure, and the states of matter. The event includes foggy dry ice storms and demonstrates how giant beach balls can float in the air. Students will be amazed by sizzling, shivering scissors and special bubbly showers”. This assembly will take place on Tuesday, September 30 from 2-3pm. Students who have not received an orange WIN slip in September will be able to be out of uniform, enjoy a snack, and participate in the workshop. Did your child stay a Peacemaker? Please feel free to come and enjoy this event.

ACTIVADAD DE LA PAZ
La actividad de paz en septiembre es una asamblea de performances de la ciencia llamada “Fuego, Viento y Hielo. Es muy bueno y estudiantes estará feliz como aprender la reacción con química, presión de aire y estado de materia, etc. Esta asamblea es martes, 30 de septiembre de 14;00 y 15:00. Los estudiantes que no recibe papeles de najeranas en septiembre no necesitan usar uniformes, tienen refrescos, y participan en la asamblea. ¿Su hijo (a) estaba una persona de la paz? Los padres pueden participar.

BASKETBALL PRACTICE
Students who signed up will have a basketball practice schedule in their Thursday envelope this week. Please check the schedule for your child’s first practice. Students must be passing all coursework and have respectful behavior in order to play. Unfortunately, Blessed Sacrament does not have room for our fifth grade girls, so we are asking another school. We’ll keep you up-dated.

PRACTIA DE BASQUETBOL
Estudiantes que escribir una participación en basquetbol recibirá un horario este jueves con este. De favor de cheque el horario para primera práctica. Los participantes necesitan notas buenas y tienen buen comportamiento. 

BEFORE CARE
Please be aware that Before Care hours are from 7am-7:30am. If your child comes before 7:30am, they are considered Before Care and a fee of $30 per week is charged. If your child is also in Extended Day, the price drops to $60 for 6 weeks or $10 a week. Our Before Care Director has informed me that more students are arriving before 7:30am. Breakfast is from 7:30am-7:50am daily.

CUIDADO EN LA MANANA

NEWSLETTER
As we roll into fall at Sister Thea Bowman Catholic School, we are working on creating a special newsletter to share with you and our supporters of all the exceptional learning and activities your children are experiencing. On October 2nd and 3rd, Cathy Arnold will be on site to capture candid images of our students and school. Cathy has photographed many of our Advent Prayer Services and Spring Concerts and has a special appreciation for what we do here.

First quarter midterm was last Friday. Midterm reports will be sent home with your child tomorrow, September 18. TESTING
Students in Grades 2-8 will take the Iowa Assessment Test starting this Monday, September 22, and going through Wednesday, October 1. AN INVITATION
Fr. Carroll Mizicko, OFM, pastor of St. Augustine of Hippo Church in East. St. Louis and our chaplain, is inviting all our families to a one hour meeting in our chapel to find out more about the Catholic faith and what your child is learning here at Sister Thea Bowman Catholic School.

Session 1 of Extended Day ends next Friday, September 26. Please complete the enclosed form if you are interested in enrolling your child in Session 2, which begins on Monday, September 29 and ends on November 7. The cost for the 6-week session is $50.00 for one child and $70.00 per family. Students are placed in one of three groups depending on their grade level: Kindergarten through grade 2, grades 3-5, and grades 6-8. Building of skills and more individualized instruction and homework help is emphasized. This next six weeks, students will have the opportunity to also Praise Dance under the direction of Rev. Holliway-Wiggins and/or learn the art of Storytelling under the guidance of Mrs. Marilyn Kinsella.

CURRICULUM NIGHT
Tonight’s the Night! Hoping to see you all here. Curriculum Night begins in the chapel at 7pm. Staff members will be introduced, and then you will hear some tips on how to use My Student’s Progress, a web based service that allows parents/guardians online access to their student’s assignments, grades, and activities from any computer with a connection to the internet.

We will walk over to the school together, so you can start your day with your “class”. Curriculum Night is the time for you to experience a bit of what your child experiences each day and to find out what will be covered in the curriculum and teacher expectations. You don’t want to miss it. At the end of the night (about 8:30pm), you will be given a Non-Uniform Pass…give it to your child, and they may be out of uniform on Friday.

Due to Curriculum Night, there is No Extended Day.

NOCHE DE CURICULO
Esta es la noche! Esperamos su presencia. La noche de curiculo comienza en la capilla a las 19:00. WE NEED YOU
As part of your commitment to Sister Thea Bowman Catholic School, this year we are asking you to volunteer your “time, talents, or treasure”. There will be sign-up sheets in each homeroom on Curriculum Night. We need help in the following areas: building and grounds (maintenance/care), school cleaning, working in the classroom, working in the office, Annual Fund Drive, Annual Benefit Dinner, and/or any additional ways you feel can help. Our goal is to have all families involved. Please look at what you can do to make our school even stronger. We need you!

MASS
Our first Mass for the year will be Friday, September 5, at 8:30a.m. in the chapel. This is our Opening Mass; classes will walk in with their Peace Flags. You are welcome to join us for this Mass, as well as all Masses held throughout the year. Ordinarily, our Masses are every Friday at 8:30a.m. Please check the calendar for any alternate dates.

REDUCED/FREE MEAL APPLICATION
Don’t forget to complete the application for free/reduced meals and return it as soon as possible. The deadline for the application is Monday, September 8. Please note that failure to return a completed application form will result in full payment of meals.

STAFF MEETING
The staff meeting for September will be held on Friday, September 19. There will be No School that day due to staff members participating in Professional Learning Teams with five other area schools.

PEACEMAKER ACTIVITY
Tomorrow is our first Peacemaker Activity of the year. Students who were peacemakers during August (no Orange WIN slips!) will attend a Peacemaker Activity on Friday, August 29, at 2pm. Students will learn a little bit about Sister Thea Bowman, color a picture created by our kindergarten teacher, Ms. Jean Widener, and create ice cream sundaes. Peacemakers may also be out of uniform that day. Please check the handbook for appropriate clothing on Non-uniform Days (p.23 of Parent/Guardian/Student Handbook). If a student comes in wearing something inappropriate, parents/guardians will be called to bring a uniform to school.

ACTIVIDADES DE ESTUDIENTES DE PAZ
La mañana hay primera actividad de estudiantes de paz en este ano. Los estudiantes que fueron “peacemakers” durante el mes de agosto (no informe de escuela en arañado) van a asistir una actividad el viernes, 29 de agosto a las 14:00. Los estudiantes aprenderán un poco de la Hermana Thea Bowman, pongan color en un imagen creada por Senora Jean Widener, maestra de Kinder y crean un helado especial. Los estudiantes “peacemakers” no necesitan usar ropa de uniforme este dia (referencia reglas para estudiantes p.23). Si un estudiante llega con ropa inapropiada, los padres va recibir un llamad y necesitan traer un uniforme.

UNIFORMS

PEACEMAKER ACTIVITY
Ordinarily, our first peacemaker activity for the year is at the end of September. As a special incentive, students who are peacemakers during August (no Orange WIN slips!) will attend a Peacemaker Activity on Friday, August 29, at 2pm. Ice cream might be involved! Peacemakers may also be out of uniform that day. Please check the handbook for appropriate clothing on Non-uniform Days (p.23 of Parent/Guardian/Student Handbook).

PICKING UP YOUR STUDENT
Morning drop off is going quite well, but there is still some confusion about afternoon pick up. If your student is in Kindergarten through fourth grade, you will pick them up at the front of the school. Students in grades 5-8 will meet their rides at the back of school unless they have family members in the younger grades; they then may go out front to meet their ride. When picking up at the front, you must pull into a parking slot. Do not have your child cross the road to come to your car. Also, if you go around the back, wait for your child to come to you and then continue to drive toward the graveyard and around the side of the cafeteria/chapel as you exit onto Church Lane. Do not go against traffic. Your child’s safety is our top priority. Thank you.

En la manana los padres que trajan sus nero para recojar sus ninos en la tarde usan estas direcciones:
Estudientes de Kinder hasta cuarto salen de puerta en fronte de la escuala. Estudientes de quinto hasta octavo salen de puerta atras la escuala si no tiene estudiantes en K-4. Cuando recojer estudientes en fronte de la escuela, necesita tomar una lugar marcado y espera sus favor, nota coche. Tambien si pasa atras, espera para su estudiente hasta llegue al coche y continua manajar in direccion del cemeterio y pasa la cafeteria cuando entra Church Lane.

EXTENDED DAY
As you are aware from the handbook, we have an Extended Day program for students in grades K-8. This optional program runs Monday through Friday from 3:30pm-5:00pm. It is important to have this on file, even if you already signed the preliminary sheet at the Ice Cream Social.
